How to prepare for UNSW's 2025 LAT

2025 LAT Plus Accelerator

The April 2025 LAT Plus Accelerator Program coaching session was a resounding success, marked by high engagement from students preparing for the Law Admission Test (LAT). Aspiring UNSW law students participated enthusiastically in our one-day intensive workshop, diving into practice questions and lively discussions. The result was a high-energy learning experience that feedback from attendees was that they were feeling more confident about the LAT and their law school aspirations. Now, we’re excited to announce that enrolments for the May LAT Plus Accelerator session are open – and spots are filling fast. In this post, we recap April’s success and explain how you can boost your LAT preparation for UNSW Law through our program.

What is the Law Admission Test (LAT)?

The Law Admission Test (LAT) is a selection test for entry into undergraduate law programs at UNSW Sydney. It was developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in conjunction with UNSW Law & Justice. In addition to high school score results, UNSW uses the LAT to gain a more rounded view of each applicant’s potential. If you’re a aiming to study law at UNSW, you must sit the LAT – your LAT score, together with your academic results (e.g. ATAR), will be considered in the selection process. The LAT helps differentiate among many high-achieving students by assessing skills that an ATAR alone can’t show

What does the LAT assess?

Unlike a knowledge exam, the LAT doesn’t require any specific legal knowledge. It is a writing-based test designed to evaluate your aptitude for law studies. The exam focuses on critical thinking and analysis, problem-solving, and the ability to organise and express ideas clearly.

In practical terms, you will face two extended writing tasks in which you must respond to prompts or materials by formulating well-reasoned arguments. The test is professionally designed and marked to gauge exactly the kind of reasoning and communication skills needed for success in a law degree and legal career as you will need to have the critical thinking and writing ability to thrive in law school.

When is the LAT held?

The LAT is offered only once per year. For example, the 2024 LAT took place on 30 September 2024. This means you get just one opportunity each year to sit the exam, and LAT results are valid for two years. The 2025 LAT date will be confirmed by UNSW and ACER soon – typically it’s scheduled in the later part of the year. With limited chances, it’s crucial to prepare thoroughly and well ahead of time so you can ace the LAT when the day comes.

How is the LAT Scored? (Skills and Criteria)

Scoring of the LAT is based on quality of thinking and writing, not rote knowledge. Each of your essay responses is evaluated on several key criteria:

  • Sophistication of Ideas: Examiners look at the substance and subtlety of your arguments. Rather than judging what position you take, they assess how thoughtfully you develop your ideas and insights. A top essay presents compelling, original points and a nuanced understanding of the issue.

  • Structure and Organization: A well-structured response is essential. Your essay should have a logical flow, with ideas organised coherently into an introduction, body, and conclusion. A clear structure helps demonstrate your ability to organise ideas effectively

  • Clarity and Fluency of Expression: Good writing skills are crucial. You need to express your ideas in a clear and fluent way using proper grammar and persuasive style. The marker will be looking for writing that is easy to follow and articulate, with a confident command of language.

  • Critical Perspective: The LAT specifically tests critical thinking, so it’s important to show you can problem solve and critically analyse stimulus to evaluate arguments. In your response, you should question assumptions, consider multiple viewpoints, and develop a reasoned critical analysis of the material given. This “thinking like a lawyer” aspect – weighing different arguments and crafting a persuasive response – is highly valued in scoring.

  • Relevance to the Prompt: Staying on topic and fulfilling the task requirements is fundamental. All the sophisticated ideas and writing skill need to be applied to the question asked. Ensuring your content is relevant and on-point will satisfy the “focus of the particular task” that the exam criteria require.

  • Tip: You are not assessed on having a “right” opinion – there is no right or wrong stance on the prompts. Instead, what matters is how well you argue your case. The LAT markers reward insightful ideas backed by reasoning, presented in a clear, structured, and persuasive manner.

The Law Admission Test 2025 Accelerator Program

April’s LAT Plus Accelerator session demonstrated just how effective an intensive LAT coaching program can be. The session was conducted online over a single day (from 9 AM to 1 PM) and was packed with interactive, practical learning. Students weren’t just sitting and listening – they actively participated by solving practice problems, deconstructing essay prompts, and asking lots of questions. Our instructors fostered a collaborative environment where live Q&A and real-time feedback were integral parts of the class. Every participant had the chance to pose questions and apply new strategies through practical examples and practice questions, with instructors providing guidance at each step.

The engagement level was outstanding and this high interactivity kept everyone motivated and focused. By the end of the workshop, students had not only learned the core LAT strategies, but also practiced them under exam-like conditions. Many attendees reported that they walked away feeling significantly more confident and prepared to tackle the LAT.

Another hallmark of the April program’s success was the personalised support students received. Our small group format (spots are limited in each session) meant instructors could give individual attention. For example, during the essay practice, instructors offered individual feedback on how to strengthen each student’s argument structure and writing clarity. This kind of tailored coaching is hard to get in larger, lecture-style courses and is a big reason our students improve so much in one day.

The April Accelerator sold out quickly, underscoring the demand for quality LAT tutoring. Given the rave reviews and high engagement from this session, it’s no surprise that the upcoming May session is already in high demand as well. If you missed out in April, you’ll want to act fast to secure a spot in May!

By the end of the session, you will have practiced each type of task and understand exactly what the exam markers are looking for. Students often tell us they finally “get” how to approach LAT prompts after our training, as opposed to feeling unsure or overwhelmed before.

  • Interactive & Confidence-Boosting: Our Accelerator is not a dry lecture. It’s a hands-on, interactive coaching session where you’ll engage in discussions, work through examples, and get your questions answered on the spot. The instructors provide feedback throughout the program, adjusting to your needs in real time. You even have the opportunity to attempt additional practice essays after the class and receive complimentary written feedback post-program to further hone your skills. This continuous feedback loop ensures you walk away confident in your ability to handle LAT questions. Instead of simply hearing theory, you actively apply techniques and improve on the spot – the confidence boost is amazing.
